Ramblings of a Madman, vol. 103

I really didn't think I'd have time to do a post this week as I was only supposed to be at the farm between events for about 36 hours.  However, I misread the schedule for this week's Street Rod Nationals at Richmond Raceway and found I don't have to be there until tomorrow, giving me an extra day at home. [/caption] Over the weekend, the weather God once again gave us some problems in Woodbridge for a short home stand of the Potomac Nationals.  It stormed all around us on Friday, which completely killed the crowd even though the game was played.  Saturday, which should have been a huge game, was rained out costing me a bunch.  The double header on Sunday recouped maybe $200 of the lost revenues from Saturday, but nowhere near what we should have taken in. Sunday was Doggie Day at the Pfitz which was a rather unique event.  You could actually bring your dog to the games and their ticket was only $1.  A regular customer for lemonade all day was a German Shepard. I wanted to put a saddle on one of the Great Danes and have Intern Lyle ride him and race Uncle Slam around the bases, but that idea didn't get very far. [/caption] On the serious side, the P Nats folks do a great job of offering special promotions and events during the season which keep the fans coming in.  I definitely made a good move in signing with them for the season and surely hope to be there next year. One other note from the P Nats, Drew Storen, a young relief pitcher out of Stanford, was called up 12 days ago from Woodbridge to Harrisburg, a AA affiliate of the Nationals. So far, he has appeared in 6 games, has 6 saves, with a 0.00 ERA.  Sweet.  We keep hoping he'll get called up to the Bigs before the year is over but in all likelihood, we'll see him in Washington next year. His mom, Pam, is one of my Twitter buddies. My congratulations to the US Solheim Cup team for a great win over the weekend.  While I didn't get to watch it live, as I was driving back and forth from Harrisonburg to Woodbridge all weekend, the Golf Channel had replays all night so I got to see most of it. As you know, I have long been a supporter and fan of the LPGA and Women's golf.  I think the weekend did more toward enhancing its popularity than any event in a long time.  Christina Kim, Morgan Pressel, Michelle Wie, Natalie Gulbis, and Kristy McPherson are all Twitter pals and all played well. I was especially angered at the idiot fans who after the fact, were critical of Christina's antics during the Cup.  Not only was I not offended by her actions, I thought her enthusiasm and emotions gave the girls a lift almost as much as the surprising play and leadership of Michelle, a rookie and first time Solheim Cupper. Fabulous week for Women's Golf. Speaking of anger, I did get upset over the weekend at one of the ball games.  There was a long legged brunette who must have forgotten her underwear, because she wasn't wearing any.  Get a grip lady.  There's a bunch of kids here and that dress is totally inappropriate. I woke up this morning to the news that Senator Ted Kennedy lost his battle with cancer.  Even though I disagreed at times with him, I got to know him back in the days when I was a lobbyist spending a lot of time in DC.  My mother's favorite picture was one of me on the floor of the Senate, with Ted and Senator Mark Hatfield of Oregon.  I, of course, was talking with my hands, as I am apt to do.  The picture hung on moms wall for years. May he rest in peace. For now, its off to Richmond, followed by the last eight days in Woodbridge with the P Nats.  Then back to Richmond for the fall Nascar events at Richmond Raceway.  Reports to follow.
