Crazy Week #2 Concludes

Crazy Week #2 came to a soggy conclusion last night with a tremendous thunderstorm at Woodbridge that washed out the end of the final game of the Potomac Nationals home stand. The sad part, I was having a really good night when the skies opened.
The week started last Thursday with the P Nats first $1 beverage ladies night. Good crowd and the Big Red Crew's best Thursday of the season.
Friday was a little better than any Friday thus far with the exception of July 3. During the night, a cute little girl, about 10 years old, came up to the booth and said she really wanted a big funnel cake but she only had $4 left. I turned to her and said, "Oh, my. You're my 1,000th customer tonight so you get a big funnel cake for the price of a mini-funnel cake."
"Cool," she replied.
As I was cooking it, Peggy asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up.
"A shyster," she answered. I almost died laughing.
Later, she came back with her grandmother and wanted to know if I could come to her school for a fund raiser she was organizing to raise money for kids that didn't have cash for school supplies. Pretty sharp for a 10 year old.
After the game, I drove back to the farm to pick up Big Red for the

American Cancer Society Summer Cooler at Rebec Vineyard on Saturday. Sister Jean and I worked the Cooler and it was a fun event. In addition to the wine tasting and activities for kids, there were two bands. Because I was so busy, I didn't have the chance to take any pictures or even get the name of the groups but one's lead singer was the local bank manager and the other was a local dentist. Actually they were both quite good especially the dentist's group who played oldies that kept Jean and I dancing in Big Red while pouring funnel cakes and serving customers.
Meanwhile, Peggy, Tank, Ryan and Chuck were getting slammed at the P Nats game. Saturdays are just huge for us and this was no exception. Long lines and tons of lemonade and funnel cakes.
Thankfully, the nice folks at Rebec let me leave Big Red so I could head back to Woodbridge and I got there in time to help Peggy with the nights bookkeeping and inventory controls: two items she's not used to doing.
We almost died at both locations as the temperature approached the 100 degree mark. It was particularly tough on Big Red because I was doing a nearly full menu with burgers, dogs, bar-b-que and fries plus the funnel cakes.

Sunday was a major disappointment. Fairly good crowd, but it was so hot, nobody wanted anything but water. Lemonade sales weren't even that good and of course almost no funnel cakes at all. For some reason, Sundays have been down days for us all season and I'm not sure why?
After the game Sunday, I drove back to Rebec to retrieve Big Red and brought it back to the farm. Monday was an off day for the P Nats which gave me the chance to get much needed brakes on Sweet Pea. When I need brakes, I really need BRAKES. I think they had to replace everything at a cost of over $700. Licking my wounded pride and thinned wallet, I drove back to Woodbridge for a Tuesday noon game time.

It was another kids day with tons of day campers and youth groups. While I didn't do many funnel cakes, I had trouble keeping up with the lemonade and it ended being another good day. Best Tuesday of the season.
Wednesday was really slow and the only bad day of the home stand. And I kept getting people coming up asking if my stuff was free. Duh? What do they think I am a soup kitchen?
Thursday (last night) was the second $1 beverage night and the idea obviously has caught on because it was a great crowd and I was having a great night when the rains came. At one point, I think I was moving lemonade at a pace comparable to the pace of the $1 beers at the concession stand. When the storm hit, I think there were about 15 people in line that had to run for cover. Unfortunately, I took in enough rain in the fryer that I was not able to reopen.

All in all, another great home stand. But I feel like I drove about 10,000 miles this past week.
For now, I get a much needed break. I'm off until next Friday with the start of a short home stand. From then until Thanksgiving, I'm booked solid so I plan to put in some serious pool time doing nothing more than contemplating my navel and sipping a few adult beverages.
