ACS Easter Egg Hunt: AWESOME

Today was my first event for the American Cancer Society.  The Smyth County Easter Egg Hunt, held at Hungry Mother State Park, west of Marion, served as a fund raiser for the Smyth County Relay For Life, which will be held later this summer.  Big Red will be there also. Since I wasn't sure where I was going, nor how long it would take pulling Big Red, I drove down on Friday and stayed  in Wytheville.  That left only 45 minutes or so for Saturday morning.  But what a drive it was.  30-40 MPH winds are tough when you're pulling a trailer.   And, yes Jason, I had a bourbon or two before I went to bed. I'm not sure how many people they had today, but the crowds seemed huge to me and even though it was a short event, only about three hours, funnel cakes were hot and I had 20-30 people in line the entire time.  Congrats to Jane from ACs and Anita for putting on a fabulous show. I used a short menu for this event offering only funnel cakes, lemonade and frie

s.  There were several other vendors covering other food items.  As it worked out, it was good for me as I might have been in trouble with a full menu. Peggy has a case of bronchitis and let me know at 5:30 this morning she wouldn't be there.  So, I had to work it myself.  With just the three items, I handled it pretty well.  But it would have been awful with everything else.  It was cold enough early--about 35 degrees--that I didn't get swamped with lemonade and was able to keep up with the funnel cakes and making batter in between pouring and serving.  The fries, as always, slowed things down some but I used one fryer for them and one for funnel cakes.  Service might have been better, but it wasn't bad.

I'm taking this week off.  Easter week and Christmas week are the only two weeks I'm not somewhere.  And, of course, the week I hope to take for a cruise after football season.  But, the rest of the month is full.  Baseball starts with a 6 game home stand next week, there is a Kickers game, and then race week at RIR. Hopefully, Peggy and I can both get healthy with the down time.
