Records Fall: Luck Changing?
As bad as things have gone lately, I needed a good week with everything going right for a change. While not perfect, it was certainly better.
As partially reported in my last post, Tank and I finished off a good three days at Wards Road Walmart. We kept things fairly simple and only offered funnel cakes, corn dogs, hot dogs and fresh squeezed lemonade rather than my full menu. The weather was decent and while not per day what a weekend there would be, the three days were good. I also got the insurance taken care of from the wreck, purchased a new grill and got the trailer repaired. I also got part of the shopping done for the weekend, but didn't have room on the truck for everything. Friday at Richmond Auto Auction was a little disappointing due mainly to the weather. Rained hard during setup and for the first hour or so. Cleared, got muggy. Then started raining again during our shutdown and pack up period. Even though there was a decent crowd, I think it would have been better if the weather had been good during the early morning drive time. At any rate, we were soaked--AGAIN. Business was better than the past couple of weeks but still disappointing. Peggy and I did the rest of our shopping for Saturday at Amelia, drove there, unloaded and got as much of the set up work done on Friday night since we were scheduled to start so early on Saturday. There were more campers and RVs on Friday than at any of our previous race days at Amelia. And, a bunch more came during the night and early Saturday. We arrived at the raceway about 4:30 am and began, opening for breckfast at 6:00 am. I actually served the first customer at 5:45 and probably should have simplified the menu a little but I really wanted to impress these folks. I'm pretty sure we did that. Tank arrived at 6:00. Remember he had a 2 hour drive so he had as little sleep as Peggy and I. My sister, Jean, got there about 9:00, right in the middle of breckfast. Basically, Tank worked the window and took orders. I cooked. Jean handled drinks and Peggy prepped and kept us all stocked and tried to keep things clean and orderly. When the heat got to me and I needed a break, Tank would take my place and Jean handled the window. NOTE: I had to promise not to make any mention of my sister's mathmatical skills, so I won't. But, I went thru a bunch of eggs, bacon, sausage and gravy biscuits. Plus, a ton of coffee. We shut down for about 30 minutes to switch over to our regular menu and never saw the light of day until almost midnight. The VDKA race had 328 entries with an average of almost 4 people per entry. Plus staff at the track. Plus the public. By the time it was over, we had run out of fries, bologna burgers, Bar-B-Que, chips, most of our canned drinks leaving only Diet Mountain Dew and 3 Diet Pepsi's, all of our buns, cheese for the cheese burgers and corn dogs. We had three hot dogs left, a few steaks, about 15 burgers and funnel cake supplies. I grossly overestimated bottled water and had 41 of those left. Not much considering how many people we cooked for. We destroyed our sales record for one day by over $700 and our weekly sales record by almost $1,200. Not too shabby with the way things have recently gone. Unfortunately, I could only get motel rooms in Farmville so that was a rough 30 minutes after midnight. Since I've spent alot of time with Tank, he's been picking up some of my bad habits. No, he hasn't started using any of my repertoire of four letter expletives. Nor has he started smoking or drinking bourbon. He has, however, started watching women, one of my favorite pastimes. But, during the races, he was so busy that he completely missed two scantily clad young hoochey mommas sunbathing on top of a nearby RV. I, however, didn't miss it. This morning--or was it afternoon--Peggy and I went back to Amelia to clean up, pack up and load up for this week. Tank is tackling a Walmart by himself while Peggy and I are off on the road again. We'll see if the good things continue.
