Call A Medic
Boy, did my schedule change this week. Nothing like I predicted in last week's missive.
Wednesday, on my way to Fredericksburg, I had my meeting with Americrown at Richmond Raceway. To avoid two trips, I left Lynchburg loaded for both the auction and the huge show I was counting on at Richmond. While the meeting went well, I did get bumped out of the RV show because the promoter had no space for me and the Old Domionion Building, which will be a permanent location for us at future shows, was rented out to an RV vendor who wanted no concessions in the whole area.
The auction was a little better than it has been but quite frankly, we're still working out the bugs on running two locations. I might have to add a fourth person because on the good days, Peggy and Laur
a are kept busy at the stand and it is too much for me to cook for both, serve and take care of cutomers from the tent. But, we're getting there. A little more fine tuning and our operation will be back to my standards.
I picked up a one-dayer at Lexington Walmart on Friday, which was terribly slow, and then set up for Liberty's double header with UNC-Asheville on Saturday. Remember, Tank and the boys were in Pennsylvania paintballing, so Peggy ran the inside, I was outside cooking, and I recruited my sister, Jean, as a runner. This would have worked fine had my volume been like the previous games at Liberty. But I was surprised by the influence of Kenny George from Asheville.
George is like 8 foot seven or something crazy like that. In the picture above, he's the big guy. The little guy trying to push him out of the lane, is only 6'11". George can stand flat footed and dunk the ball. Unfortunately, he is injured and didn't play but Lynchburgers turned out in huge numbers to see him. Largest crowd I've seen for basketball at Liberty in the two years I've been doing the games.
Both Liberty teams won handily and alot of fans left happy with their bellies full. It was a record setting basketball game for us. Thankfully, I used our high volume set-up but we still had ridiculous lines and stayed busy all night.
That brings us to the medic thing. Before the game, I was hooking up the propane tank to one of my fryers and my wrench slipped off the nut and jammed my finger thru the hardware causing a compound fracture of my index finger. Not having the time to worry about things like doctors and hospitals, I calmly set my finger getting the stupid bone back in place, covered it with a couple of bandaids to stop the bleeding, wrapped it with duct tape to hold it secure, and covered the whole mess with rubber gloves. Pouring funnel cakes became a bit of a chore, but I got it done---and only stuck my finger in the hot oil once. Anyone know a doctor that wants to moonlight cooking funnel cakes? I may need him again. Unfortunately, that is all true and not exaggerated at all.
I'm still terribly disappointed with the lack of support the girls get. While the girls game was better for us than they've been, attendance was about 20% of the crowd for the mens game. The girls got their 20th win of the season and have a really good shot at going somewhere in the NCAA tournament but Lynchburg just doesn't get it. The girls deserve crowds like the men got last night.
On a more serious note, it has come to my attention that I have offended some readers with some of the entries to my blog. It clearly was not my intention, and for that I am truly sorry. However, to my defense, my blog is here for two reasons. It is first a way to keep friends and family apprised of what we're doing. Secondly, it is here to entertain. I don't advertise it and it is certainly not associated in anyway with any of the venues where we sell our products. I don't use it as a forum to advance any political or social agenda, it is simply a report and, I hope, a way of getting a laugh or two. Admittedly, I have a warpped and somewhat irreverent sense of humor but I sincerely didn't mean to offend.
So, for now, it's off to Richmond for the Boat Show and our first effort in the Old Dominion Building for Americrown. It is a four day show so I have had to cancel out the auction for this week and the girls game at Liberty on Saturday. I'm going to pull in Peggy, Laura and Anthony plus I hope at least two of the boys from Liberty. It should be interesting.
