Topsy-Turvy Week
This week had so many ups and downs I may have been on a roller coaster. Somehow, we still managed a decent week thanks to the way it ended.
The week really started as soon as I got home last Sunday and I began following my son Jason and his Twitter efforts for Jim Beam and Robby Gordon Racing. I pretty much followed everything that happened at Phoenix, the trip to Mexico and the Baja 1000. Unfortunately, I missed out on Tuesday night as I was at Liberty's first home basketball game, followed again during the night and early Wednesday, then had to miss the finish in Cabo as I had to leave for Fredericksburg. Robby finished third, not what they had hoped for as he had won the Baja four times before, but still a great effort and fun for me since Jason was envolved. Note: The picture is of Robby and Jason in Ensenada, Mexico just before the start of that crazy off-road race. Jason was Twittering for something like 32 straight hours.
Liberty's first home game was a dog--my first downer of the week. Everything was set for a good game but it just didn't happen. Poor attendance probably from Liberty losing three straight on the west coast plus many of the kids are in exam week.
Thursday at Fredericksburg was horrible. Pouring down rain and cold with 30 mph winds. My second downer of the week. It was so bad I couldn't even get the tent set up and thought once that the wind was going to sweep Peggy away as she tried to hold down the tent while I strapped it down. I gave up. To save the day, I set up Peggy and Laura inside and I cooked outside in the rain. All I could do was steaks as there was no way to fire up the fryer for cakes and corn dogs. Somehow we managed a decent day and went through three and a half loins. Not bad for the worst weather we've had to face.
At the same time, Tank and crew did the first day of the Big South Volleyball Tournament at Liberty. Would you believe in eight hours they had total sales of $27? My third downer of the week. I made one of my famous managerial decisions and shut things down and opted out of the next two days. That was definetly the right thing for me to do as attendance Friday and Saturday was less that 300 each day.
Saturday was a different story and saved the week. Peggy, Laura and I did JMU's final home game and I used the two fryer set up I'd used at Liberty. We rocked! Best game I've had a JMU in two years. While it wasn't as big as Liberty's games--remember at JMU all I can offer is Funnel Cakes and Corn Dogs--it was great. And it worked the three of us half to death.
Then today, back at the farm, I learned that JMU made the playoffs, Liberty didn't. But, JMU is on the road so we don't get an extra home game unless some really strange things happen and they make it to the second round with several other teams losing. That isn't very likely. My fourth and final downer of the week
So, I have an easy week. The auction is moved to Wednesday but I'm not expecting much. Laura and I will work it as Peggy will be getting ready for Thanksgiving and her annual cooking for 40. I'm planning on taking the rest of the week off and spend some quality time with Peggy and her grandson.
To all of you, Happy Thanksgiving. I'll check in again after the holiday.
