All Good Things Come To An End
This week was my easiest of the fall--only two events--and it featured an ending and a new beginning. Somewhat unusual for the adventures.
The beginning is new quarters for Peggy and I in Fredericksburg. We've been staying in one of those bottom drawer, plain Jane cheap chain motels. Its been OK but no amenities. Last week, Peggy couldn't drive over on Wednesday night, so I had a night on the town and decided to walk across the street to a Holiday Inn and have a drink or two. While enjoying a little bourbon and chatting with a couple of dealers there for the auction, I found out that Holiday Inn gives a special rate for auction folks. I checked into it, found out what I needed to do to qualify, got an assist from Chuck Priest of Carolina Motorcars, and now have a permanent reservation. With a couple of pools, a gym and a sauna, a
surprisingly good restaurant with a bar, and of course a much nicer room, would you believe its $5 cheaper?
Then, tonight, a really good thing came to an end. It was the last home game at Liberty, who killed VMI 150-30 or smething stupid like that. And, it was another record setter for us. Everytime I looked up, I saw Keydets in uniform. I thought I was in Iraq. I think we sold funnel cakes to the entire Corps of Keydets. Even though the A-Team was really on its game with both fryers going, we still had ridiculous lines. But, we turned them much faster. Tank and I cooked for most of the game. Pete and Steve worked the front. After Pete got fed up with writing credit card slips--$300 worth--he cooked for a good bit of the second half. It was awesome.
I sure would like to see Liberty play all eleven games at home next year!
There is an outside chance of a home playoff game if the Flames can win next week at Gardner-Webb plus we have two high school state championship games on December 8.
I must admit there was one slight problem during the game. Sometime shortly before halftime, Steve hollored that he was getting low on both sweet tea and lemonade. I turned the fryers over to Tank, set up a pan to start brewing tea and grabbed a handful of lemons. I sliced the first one and promply sliced off the end of my finger. Thankfully, Doug--one of the LU folks--ran for a bandage as the bottom of my apron wasn't helping with the bleeding. I just kept squeezing lemons, tempted to change my menu board to "Pink Lemonade".
After an easy week--by the way Thursday was another four loin day at the auction--this week is nuts. Tuesday is our first basketball game at Liberty. The auction on Thursday and the Big South Volleyball Championship Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Plus JMU's last home game on Saturday. I think I'll be ready for Thanksgiving after this week.
A note for all of our cruise friends. After tonight's game, I stopped at Benjamin's for dinner and found John Michael working in the kitchen. That's three of the McGhee's cooking now--Ben, Sam and John Michael (who has grown about four feet this past year).
And, a plug for my son Jason. He has a rough life. This weekend, he's at the race in Phoenix following some type of computer geek conference in Vegas. It is the start of traveling around the world with Robby Gordon and the Beam racing program. He'll be doing some Twitter things and other Flickr things--whatever that is--from Phoenix and then some 1000 mile race in Baja. Tough, but somebody has to do it. You can link to his endeavors at Robbygordon.com and on Jason's site at Houseofalls.com.
Also, it was announced this week that LU is developing a year-around ski facility on Chandlers Mountain using some type of artificial snow developed in Europe. Construction is set to begin in February. Could there be ski bunnies in Big Red's future?
