Allison Now 'Carney Folk'
The week started for me on Wednesday when I had to drive to Weyers Cave to get the compressor replaced on the refridgeration unit on my truck. Since that is close to Peggy's, I stayed at the apartment that night and got up at 3:00 am to drive to Fredericksburg with Peggy following close behind. We needed both vehicles to carry everything for the weekend.
After another four loin day at the auction--95 degrees--we packed up and ran down the road to Richmond to set up for the National Street Rod Association Show. Since we were required to be ready to cook at 8:30 am Friday, Peggy and I got all of the time consuming work done and then I thought we were ready for the motel. Remember my day started at 3:00 am. However, Peggy has been trying for the last three or four trips to Richmond to get me to go see "the turtles". This seemed akin to going to the dentist to me--something I avoid like the plague. I have a distaste for any reptiles, especially snakes. But, I had used up every excuse I could come up with durin
g the previous requests, and this time she was driving since the truck was plugged in at the track to keep the steaks cold. So she simply stated, "We're going to see the turtles."
What could I do? I was stuck and said nothing as she drove to Three Lakes Park, only a couple of miles from RIR. The walk wasn't too bad and the temperature had fallen to about 85 so I really couldn't bitch too much and we walked out on a huge deck surrounding an aquarium building that was overlooking what I guess is one of the three lakes. There must have been nearly a bizillion turtles. It was really cool! There were eight varieties and literally thousands of each. Begrudgingly, I admit I was fascinated and rather enjoyed our little excursion.
Friday was a dog. Hot and muggy. And very slow. 98 degrees. But the show was fun. There were over two thousand cars, all 25 years old or older, and all "street ready." There were Muscle Cars, Hot Rods, and antiques. There were even some as old as Peggy (like from the 30's and 40's). And that is really old! Don't worry folks. I'm safe since Peggy quit reading my blog shortly after I published the picture of her with the damn snake in Cancun--or was it after the "Peggy and the Serial Killer" story--or was it after I complained about sleeping with a grandmother. Anyway, she refuses to read this so unless you tell her, I get by with one.
In truth, there were a lot of cars I remember and had stories about so I guess I'm getting old! Oh, that is hard for me to admit.
We met a bunch of new people, had some laughs, sold some Ribeyes and Funnel Cakes, and a bunch of Corn Dogs. Plus Peggy got to do a little shopping as there was a craft show going on in one of RIR's buildings.
Satuday was Hell. 104 degrees and some of the car people said the asphalt temperature was 140 degrees. We were set up on that same asphalt in a neat little outdoor food court. Noah's crew had one tent with chicken, ribs, burgers and beer. Leon, another regular vendor had a tent with ice cream and smoothies. And us. In the middle was a large tent with tables and chairs. My buddy John was across the compound with his lemonade and root beer. It was busy but not overwhelming. A good day but I was told about 50% of what it usually is for that show. Either the heat kept the crowds down or it was just too hot to eat.
Allison, Peggy's daughter who lives in Richmond, came by Saturday about noon and I immediately put her to work. Since she claims on her My Space pages to be related to Carney Folk, she now is one. I left the two girls to do the work, tied up a hammock between two pine trees and took a nap. Too hot for this old fat guy to work.
Seriously, Allison stayed busy pushing out the iced tea and drinks, I cooked steaks, cakes and dogs, and Peggy kept up the prep work, served and topped the cakes. It worked smoothly and we could easily have handled more volume. But it was HOT, especially standing over a 400 degree fryer and a large grill.
Sunday was a short day and we got out of Richmond and headed home by late afternoon. We were lucky for the week avoiding those pesky afternoon thunderstorms that reek havoc with a tent. I covered my expenses and had a dollar or two left for the next cruise fund. So, I'm happy with the week. A nice bonus is making some new friends and spending a little time with old friends we really like.
I'll close with one bit. There was one lady walking around yesterday smoking a huge stogie. I'm not talking about a "feminine" cigar, I'm talking about one of those huge, fat CEO smoking things you see in the movies. I don't think I'd like to meet her in a dark alley!
This week starts football season so I should have some more tales next week. Our first game is Saturday night at Liberty. It looks like I'm going to have to beg out of VMI on Satuday afternoon as I'm just not ready for two games in one day yet. I have to be ready by next week as I have both JMU and Liberty on that day. We'll see how that works then. Tank and the boys will handle one, Peggy and I the other. Should be interesting.
